Remote Access Server (RAS)
An optional Windows service that allows an outside
entity (such as a user) to create a connection into the
server from a remote location. Generally, the outside
entity uses this service to access server resources
such as files or applications. An outside entity can
access this service in a variety of ways, including as
a callback mechanism.
Remote Installation Services (RIS)
A Windows 2000 and higher feature that allows
administrators to install a copy of Windows on a
remote client system without physically visiting the
client machine. This feature is part of the Remote
Operating System Installation feature in Windows
2000. Microsoft has added extended forms of this feature
to all versions of Windows since Windows 2000.
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
One of several techniques for accessing a procedure
or a method (some code) within another application.
RPC is designed to look for the application first on
the local workstation and then across the network at
the applications stored on other workstations.
Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP)
A set of network rules that allows an object (usually
an application or a service) to request the resources it
needs to run from the server in advance, which
ensures that the network administrator can manage
resource usage and that the operating system can
plan ahead for application requirements.
