Some sources also call this service the
Security Accounts Manager. In either case, the security
database normally appears within a special hive
636 GLOSSARY
of the registry. Windows secures this hive using the
Registry Editor to make it difficult to access. The SAM
can also use alternative input sources such as Active
Directory.
Security Identifier (SID)
The part of an access token that identifies the object
throughout the network; it??™s the same as having an
account number at a bank or other organization. The
identifier is unique. The access token that the SID
identifies tells what groups the object belongs to and
what privileges the object has.
Sequential Packet Exchange (SPX)
The part of the IPX/SPX protocol pair that guarantees
delivery of a message sent from one node to
another. Think of SPX as the postal clerk that delivers
a certified letter from one place to another. In network
terms, each page of the letter is called a packet.
SPX delivers the letter one page at a time to the
intended party.
Service Control Manager (SCM)
The part of Windows that controls the various services
loaded to provide background support. The
SCM starts, stops, pauses, and continues services, as
well as providing service status information.
