The
SCM is also part of the load-balancing technology
used by Windows servers. When a client makes a
DCOM call to the load-balancing router, it??™s the
SCM that actually receives the request. The SCM
looks up the component in the load-balancing router
table, then makes a DCOM call to one of the servers
in the application cluster to fulfill the request. The
server in the application cluster creates an instance
of the request object, then passes the proxy for it
directly to the client. At this point, the server and the
client are in direct communication; the router is no
longer needed.

Shell Extension
A special application that gives some type of added
value to the operating system interface. Many shell
extensions provide added functionality by working
with a specific file type or provide increased user
access by offering additional commands. In most
cases, the application must register itself with the registry
before the operating system will recognize it.
