However, a lost
or stolen smart card still provides user access.
The most secure method of user identification is

GLOSSARY 637
Sparse File
A file that allocates a lot of space on a hard drive, but
actually uses very little of that space. For example, a
data cache might allocate 1 MB of hard drive space,
but only use a few KB of that space to hold data. The
system allocates the space because it could require it
to keep applications running, but the system doesn??™t
need all of the space all of the time. A sparse file is a
type of reservation system where the system
reserves hard drive space for a future need.

Structured Query Language (SQL)
Language used by most Database Management Systems
(DBMSs) to exchange information; also used by
DBMSs as their native language. SQL provides a
method for manipulating data controlled by the
DBMS. It defines which tables to use, determines
what information to get from the table, and resolves
how to sort the information. A typical request will
include the name of the database, table, and columns
needed for display or editing purposes.
