Windows New Technology File System (NTFS)
The method of formatting a hard disk drive used by
Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/2008, Server Core,
and Vista. While it provides significant speed
advantages over other formatting techniques, only
these newer versions of the Windows operating
system and applications designed to work with that
operating system can access a drive formatted using
this technique. Windows 2000 uses NTFS5, a version
of this file system designed to provide additional
features, like enhanced security. Each newer version
of Windows from Windows XP to Windows Server
2008 (including Server Core) provides an updated
version of NTFS that includes additional features. An
older version of Windows usually can??™t read a newer
version of NTFS than Microsoft designed it to use.
Windows NT LAN Manager Security (NTLM)
A security scheme based on a challenge/response
scenario. The server challenges the client, which
must then provide an appropriate username and
password. If the username and associated password
are found in the server??™s security list for the service
that the client has requested, then access to the service
is granted.
