Work with Layers
Photoshop Elements has a powerful feature known as layers. When you
open an image in Photoshop Elements, you have one layer to work with, the
background layer, which is the original image. You can add as many layers as
you need on top of the background layer. Additional layers can be duplicates of
the background layer, selections from other layers, adjustment layers, and so on.
You can control what effect a layer has on underlying layers by choosing a blend

mode and varying the layer opacity. The beauty of working with layers is that
you can duplicate the background layer and start editing the image on the layer.
If the results are not pleasing, discard the duplicate layer, and you still have
your original image with nary a pixel altered.
Create a Layer
You can create layers either using menu commands or from within the Layers
palette.
