"Practical Data Analysis and Reporting with BIRT"

Each CSV text file under
this folder will be seen as its own unique table in any Data Set that we use
later on. Specify the character encoding used, and the type. In the case of my
example, I am using a CSV set as a UTF-8-encoded file.
Working with Data
[ 76 ]
Much like the XML Data Source, we will use this a little later on too, when we build
the Data Sets. For now, we have created the Data Source that will be used to retrieve
our employees' payment information.
We are going to skip the scripted Data Source for the time being. This is a special
Data Source that is meant to be a placeholder for data, which gets built manually
using BIRT's scripting capabilities, either through Java Event Handlers or through
JavaScript. We will discuss these more in depth in Chapter 10 on Scripting.
New in BIRT 2.2 is the Web Services Data Source. The Web Services Data Source
functions in the same way as the other Data Source adaptors, except that it allows the
developer to use a Web Service as a Data Source.
The JDBC Data Source
The Data Source we are going to look at in detail is the JDBC Data Source. This will,
more than likely, be the Data Source you use most often. It has the largest set of
options and facilities for the out-of-the-box Data Source types, which is why I have
included it in a separate section.
