"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

Any backup made outside of the standard backup scheme
should be done as a copy-only backup:
BACKUP DATABASE AdventureWorks
TO DISK='D:\data\AW.bak'
WITH INIT,
CHECKSUM,
COPY_ONLY
While this is a useful feature, you still must specify it explicitly. If you don??™t have tight
control over who has the right to back up a database, it can be difficult to control when
the COPY_ONLY feature should be used.
CHAPTER 2 n MAKING DATABASE BACKUPS 36
Additional Backup Considerations
Before leaving this chapter, you need to at least be aware of some additional backup
types. The following subsections explain them.
Structure Backup
I find it useful to create a backup of the T-SQL script that could re-create the structure of
the database itself. There are times when a database becomes corrupted in such a way
that there is no way to bring it online, but only to start it in what is termed emergency
mode. While in that mode, you can copy data out of the database, but that??™s about it. If
you don??™t have an empty, clean destination for that data, the emergency mode won??™t do
you any good.
