"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

You??™re making the purchase before you even know what your requirements
are, remember? While the idea of openly allocated money for hardware purchases
is seductive, don??™t be enthralled before identifying your requirements.
Legitimate hardware constraints from a technical perspective usually fall in the area
of capacity:
??? Do you have tape drives available for use?
??? Do you have enough tapes to maintain a thorough backup history?
??? Do you have sufficient disk space for TO DISK backups?
??? Do you have enough disk space to perform mirrored backups of the transaction
log?
Be deliberately conservative with estimations. If money is allocated toward hardware,
make sure that it will be a significant amount of time before you??™ll need to request
additional funds.
CHAPTER 5 n CREATING A BACKUP/RECOVERY PLAN 109
DISK IS CHEAP
Lately, whenever I discuss the need for concise database design or the importance of maximizing disk
utilization, a common response to my recommendations is simply ???Disk is cheap.??? It??™s true; the cost of
storage continues to drop as capacity continues to rise.
