Dan Ablan

"Inside LightWave v9"

After graduating college with a Bachelor??™s
degree in broadcast journalism, I promptly went to work for a very small CBS affiliate. If
your idea of experience is standing in the center of Indiana with a 70-pound camera on
your shoulder in the 20-degree Midwest cold, then I??™ve got the referral!
For me, I wanted more, and moved up to a program manager position for a large cable television
outfit. There, I discovered 3D animation via NewTek??™s LightWave 3D and an
Amiga computer. Now, you have to remember, today 3D is everywhere. In 1989, 3D was
only prevalent in hugely expensive systems in the top video production studios, and
mostly in an experimental state. Either way, one look at a small red apple rendering one
pixel at a time (I think it took an hour or so) and I was hooked. From there I produced
corporate video for a couple of years, and along the way emmersed myself in 3D.
In 1994, I went to work for an Amiga dealership, selling and training Video Toaster and
LightWave systems. Also in 1994, I was fired from the Amiga dealership because
Commodore stopped making Amigas. However, I had started doing 3D work on the side,
and with the help of unemployment checks from the state of Illinois, I was able to forge
ahead with my own business, AGA Digital Studios.
