"Inside LightWave v9"

The edges need to be clean and smooth, and no matter how much quality you put
into your models, surfaces, lighting, and camera technique, you won??™t have a perfect render
until you set the antialiasing. Antialiasing cures the jagged edges between foreground
and background elements. It is a smoothing process that creates cleaner-looking animations.
Figure 5.19 shows a rendered image without antialiasing; Figure 5.20 shows the
same image with a low antialiasing setting applied.

Chapter 5 3D Cameras 197
Figure 5.19 Without antialiasing, the rendered image can look jagged and unprofessional,
especially when animated. Notice the edges of the model are jagged, or stairstepped.
This is not the result of a bad model but rather an un-antialiased render.
Figure 5.20 After antialiasing is applied, even at a low setting, the image looks cleaner
and more polished. You??™ll see that the edges of the model are smooth, as
is the shadow.
Antialiasing can really make a difference in your final renders. Figure 5.21 shows the
available Antialiasing settings, including different variations of PLD (Pixel Lattice
Deformation).
