Chapter 5 3D Cameras 203
front of and behind the subject in which other objects stay in focus is called depth of field
(DOF). High depth of field keeps objects in focus in front of and behind the subject and
creates a sense of spaciousness; shallow depth of field ???flattens??? the scene, so that only the
subject is in sharp focus.
You can only activate Depth of Field if the camera has antialiasing set to a medium or better
level (PLD 7-pass or higher, or Classic-Medium or better). Checking the Depth of Field
box then activates the Focal Distance and Lens F-Stop controls that you??™ll use to manage
camera focus and adjust its depth of field.
Adjusting the depth of field is a fantastic way to add real depth to your animations.
Without DOF, everything is in focus, as in Figure 5.24.
Figure 5.24 Without Depth of Field applied, everything in your scene is in focus.
Figure 5.25 shows the same image with DOF applied.Notice how the spheres become out
of focus farther away from the camera.
Figure 5.25 With Depth of Field applied, the image is out of focus farther away from the set
focal distance.
Focal Distance
When you apply DOF, you must also tell the camera where to focus by
setting a focal distance.
