The default setting is 1m, and you can type any
value into the Focal Distance field.Objects at the focal distance are in
sharp focus in your frame, and those nearer or farther away will be out
of focus to some degree, depending on how you use f-stop settings to
control DOF (as discussed in the next section).
Using LightWave??™s grid, which is the measurement system in Layout,
you can easily determine the correct focal distance for a camera by
counting the number of grid squares between the camera and the
object you want in focus. Check the bottom of Layout??™s information
window (Figure 5.26) to determine the grid size for the current view

and multiply that by the number of squares to calculate the distance. (The default grid setting
is 1m, but in larger scenes such as the one in Figures 5.25 and 5.26, LightWave may
automatically scale the grid size up to 5m or higher.)
At a grid size of 5m, a focal distance of 15m would be appropriate for an object 3 grid
squares away from the camera; objects nearer to and farther away from the camera will
be out of focus.
