"Inside LightWave v9"

By changing the focus from say, one animated element to
a static element, you effectively are telling the viewer where to look.
Range Finder for DOF
Counting grid squares as I??™ve described is adequate for setting camera focal distances, but
it can gets tiresome. Here??™s a trick for creating an automatic range finder using a null
object, a special type of object you can place in LightWave scenes for your own reference
or guidance but that are never included in scene renders.
1. Click Null on the Items tab to create a new null object; rename it in the panel that
appears (or just use default name Null), and click OK.
2. New objects are always selected by default, so press p to open this item??™s Object
Properties and choose Range Finder from the Add Custom Object drop-down list
(Figure 5.27).
Figure 5.27 You can add a custom object to quickly measure distances in Layout from any
item, such as the camera for setting DOF measurements.

3. Double-click Range to Camera in
the Custom Object Name list, and in
the numeric Range Finder pop-up
that appears, leave Camera as the
Item setting and check the Draw
Link box (Figure 5.
