28).
To use your range finder, select Null in the Current Object drop-down list. You??™ll see a
small set of control handles and a value appear around the null object. With Auto Key
enabled at the bottom of the interface, press t to select the Move tool, and drag Null
slightly. You??™ll see a line between the camera??™s pivot point and the Range Finder null.Make
sure that Auto Key is enabled, and move the null. Remember, everything in your scene
needs a keyframe to stay in place, even if it??™s not animated. You??™ll see the measurement values
change, as shown in Figure 5.29. This value is your distance from the camera that you
can easily use to set the depth of field. If you??™re specifically trying to set the focus on an
object, simply put the Range Finder null on the object, and take the measurement. This
is a good way to calculate rack focuses for animating depth of field, as well. You can do this
in LightWave easily by animating the focus values in the Graph Editor.
Figure 5.29 With the Range Finder custom object added, when Auto Key is on, you??™ll see a
target line between the selected item (Camera) and the Range Finder.
