Note
This model is complete. This curvy A, looming large and semitransparent, will appear in
the background of our final scene. You??™ll call this object up later in Layout.
A few more things to know about using background images:
Pen isn??™t the only tool you can use to trace background images. Try the Sketch, Bezier, and
Spline Draw tools; you can even use a background image as a reference when creating full
3D primitives or other objects. You??™re using the Pen tool in this project because it creates
polygons as soon as the points are laid down. If you??™d used the Bezier tool, you??™d have been
creating curves, which would have required an extra step to ???freeze??? the curves into polygonal
faces. Remember, polygons are necessary to apply a surface and render. The Bezier
or Spline Draw options will create a smoother edge, and are very useful for more detailed
objects. Be sure to view the SplineDraw video on the book??™s DVD to learn how to use this
tool over backdrop images.
