For
purposes of this chapter, all these items can be considered gadgets, and the lessons you??™ll
learn in this chapter can be used to model any one of them in LightWave v9. The benefits
of this chapter are that you??™ll learn common modeling characteristics, such as uniformity,
smooth surfaces, edge control, buttons, and geometric shapes.
Studying the Details
Before you attempt to model anything in LightWave v9, it??™s
helpful to study a real-world version of the object. There are
times when you??™ll model something completely original that
has no reference (the flagship of an alien fleet) or when only
photo references will do (the Chrysler Building). But this
isn??™t one of those times, so seize the opportunity to study
your subject up close. Figure 9.1 shows the black Apple iPod
you??™ll model in this chapter.
Take a close look at the photo. Really look at it.How does the
light fall upon its surface? Are the markings inset or beveled?
It??™s these details that will make your model come to life. (That
goes for any model, not just this one.) The lessons you??™ll learn
in this chapter will help you identify and create those details.
