It might seem that the process up to this point was a bit
tedious, but it??™s really not. This process of using a backdrop
image and creating a base shape can be applied to all kinds
of models, from gadgets, to furniture, to characters. From
this point, you??™ll begin creating depth, and then you??™ll add
in the details.
Adding Depth
OK, on to part II of this project. This exercise will show you how to
create depth in your model and keep the front edge of the iPod
squared-off and sharp, while the back edge is smooth and more round.
Exercise 9.2 Building an iPod, Part II
1. Enter Polygons selection mode, either by pressing the spacebar until you rotate
into that mode or by clicking the Polygons button at the bottom of the interface.
2. Click the single polygon you??™ve created to select it, and then press f to flip the
polygon so its back surface is facing you.
You??™re going to bevel toward the back of the model, adding new polygons to the
existing one as you go; the new polygons??™ surfaces will face the same way as the
one you??™re beveling. If you started beveling with the polygon facing you, the iPod
surface would be facing inward, and your iPod would effectively be inside-out.
