Characters in these movies range from talking automobiles, to goofy
animals, to comedic rodents. There??™s a trend to create simple yet charismatic 3D creatures
these days, and why should you not be in on the fun? This chapter will show you how to create
a fun little character with a lot of personality. You??™ll learn how simple shapes can be used
quite effectively to develop a character while making it easy to animate at the same time.
Types of Characters
Character modeling can be considered a broad term. You see, characters today can be
anything from dancing telephones, to walking credit cards, talking cows, or a computergenerated
humans. In previous Inside LightWave books, we covered modeling human
heads, a cool giraffe, and even a crusty old man??™s head. With Inside LightWave v9,we??™ll take
a different approach and show how to create a character that??™s cute and simple, but very
expressive. And what better character than a penguin?
There are many techniques for modeling characters, and one of the most popular is the
box modeling technique. The basic concept of box modeling is to start with a basic box
primitive and, using subpatches or subdivision surfaces, transform it into a high-polygon
object while retaining the ease of manipulating a low-polygon object.
