Inside LightWave v9 474
Figure 11.41 A few settings to the Kappa
subsurface scattering node and you??™re ready
to go.

Figure 11.42 Connect the Color output to the Diffuse Shading input.
12. Go ahead and press F9 to render the current frame. Take a look at the third capsule,
the one lying on top of the other two. Notice how it has a sort of inner glow?
Figure 11.43 shows the change.
Figure 11.43 Applying subsurface scattering to a surface shows a visible, but not often desirable,
result.
13. You can see the effects of the subsurface shader, but you can make some changes
to it. You can control this shader (and any other) with a Gradient node. From the
Add Node drop-down menu, choose the Gradient entry, then the subentry also
called Gradient.
14. Double-click the Gradient node to open its properties. You??™ll see the gradient
panel you might know from LightWave??™s texture editor, as shown in Figure 11. 44.
Note
Remember to watch the Node_Intro movie on the book??™s DVD (3D_Garage_Videos\
Chapter_Videos\CH11a_NodeIntro.mov) to become familiar with the navigating
Node Editor.
