The Make Bone Weight Map Panel
The first step in understanding the use of bone weights is to explore LightWave??™s weighting
features in Modeler.Weight maps enable you to scale the falloff of various tools in
LightWave. With a weight map, a bone affects points according to the weight you set. The
result is a controlled influence that eliminates the problem you saw in the previous exercise,
when the base bone movement deformed some of the body of the Penguin object.
The next few sections will help explain some base bone weighting functions so that you
better understand how to use them.
Falloff
The Falloff setting in the Bone Weights panel determines the degree to which an applied
weight setting is ???concentrated??? within a bone and how evenly it is distributed over the
surface of the associated object. The setting works mathematically and is expressed as one

of several preset exponential Inverse Distance values. The default value, Inverse Distance
(with an implied exponent of 1), causes weight concentration to fade in direct proportion
to any affected points??™ distance from the bone.
