This is useful when compositing 3D objects over images
or video, or if the final render will go to a third-party program such as Digital Fusion or
After Effects, for compositing. You??™ll learn about compositing in Chapter 16,???Compositing
and Postprocessing Techniques.???
Surface Baking Camera
As mentioned in Chapter 5, the Surface Baking Camera will come in very handy for game
designers, architectural animators, and anyone who wants to speed up lengthy animations.
The Surface Baking Camera allows you to ???bake??? your textures into one large image map.
Say, for example, you have a complex scene with numerous image-mapped textures, procedural
textures, ray-traced shadows, radiosity for global illumination, and so on. That would
add to your render time, especially if your scene is 30 seconds, 1 minute, or longer. By using

Chapter 15 Advanced Cameras and Rendering 601
the surface baker, you render once, and all of the calculations LightWave needs to perform
are saved to an image map you specify. Then, you reload that image and apply it to your
entire scene. So, one image map contains all of the other image maps, procedurals, reflections,
shadows, and so on.
