This technique uses the Foreground key features to
remove parts of an image.
1. Using the Image Editor, continue from Exercise 16.3 and load the
Fountain_Alpha.psd image from this book??™s DVD. Uncheck Foreground
Key in the Compositing tab if it??™s still active.
2. In the Compositing tab of the Effects panel, next to the Foreground Alpha image,
click the selector and choose the Fountain_Alpha.psd image. If you want, you can
load a standard (non-grayscale) image from here as well.
3. Click the check box below Foreground Fader Alpha.
This tells LightWave to ignore the areas of the foreground image that are pure
black. The white areas of the image are dropped out.
4. Move the moon so that it??™s more centered in the shot, which will align it between
the tall building on the left and the trees on the right.
5. Press F9 to render a frame. Figure 16.22 shows the rendered image and scene setup.
Figure 16.22 Using a Foreground Alpha image gives you precise control over where the composited
foreground image will be clipped.
Obviously, the moon might not belong in the image like this; however, other objects
could, and that??™s the point.
